President’s Letter

By Fred Nagy

Hi. It is winter again. The lake is absolutely beautiful every

time of year, but winter on Crane has its own special

personality. There have been excellent conditions at the Lake

for sometime now.

Our family had a spectacular summer. We had a Denovan

family reunion (Ann’s family) at the lake. We rented a cottage

at the Crane Lake Resort and housed half the crew there, and

half at our cottage. It was a spectacular time. The family really

enjoyed the resort. Good weather isn’t necessary to have a

good time on Crane though. Part of the fun was Jim Gray

helping me get ready including moving old shingles in the rain

from our property by boat. The winter has been more

challenging. My father recently had a heart attack followed by

successful major heart surgery. We are very fortunate to live

in Canada. The care he received was amazing.

New Year’s on Crane brought very sad news. There was a

terrible snowmobile accident involving two experienced

riders. Damian Reilly and his friend Steve Nash were

returning from breakfast at Oscars on two snowmobiles and

collided on Crane Lake. Tragically, Steve Nash was killed as

a result of the collision. The Crane Lake Board expresses it

condolences to his family. Gary Mueller and Mike Collins

were first on the scene and provided first aid, notified 911

through the Resort and provided support to the Seguin fire

team. The Seguin team arrived within ½ hour which is

excellent time considering our location and the season. We are

glad to report Damian Reilly is recovering from his serious

injuries.

We received an update on the proposed modifications to Crane

Lake Dam. The funding for these modifications to the dam

have been delayed. The MNR will keep us posted as things

change.

A few years ago the Township of the Archipelago (TOA)

established a Water Access Task Force to determine

appropriate ways to ensure its residents have appropriate water

access to our properties. The Water Access Task Force

recommended taking steps for each Ward to secure access

appropriate for the Ward. The TOA recently notified Crane

Lake Association and the other associations that each property

owner will receive an all-rate payer letter to explain their

progress. As a first step, they are purchasing a marina property

on Georgian Bay. The property facilities are mainly docking,

parking and fuel tanks. The letter will be sent once the

purchase is complete. As per the strategy, the property is being

purchased with funds received from the Province of Ontario

from the creation of the Massassauga Provincial Park. Our

understanding is the TOA will ensure the users of the marina

property will cover the operation costs. No tax dollars will be

involved. The all-ratepayer letter will give us more details. A

map showing the subject property will be posted on our

website.

Some of our neighbours are very concerned with the noise

from racing activities at the Camp of the Deaf in Seguin

Township, and possible zoning infractions. They formed a

Committee in late 2009 - "The Natural Place to Be

Committee" - known as TNPTB Committee - to collect data

and take action. This committee is not associated with Crane

Lake Association, but they are our neighbours. The Camp of

the Deaf noise issue does not directly impact most Crane Lake

Association members. Some concerns our board have

identified are:

Potential safety issues from increased vehicle and

ATV traffic on the Crane Lake and Joe Koran roads

Potential inadequate sanitation facilities for

consistent periodic crowds. Any water quality

damage is unlikely to impact Crane, but would be

environmentally irresponsible.

If you are interested in more information or want to

participate, they can be reached at
tnptbcommittee@vianet.ca.

Thank you to each of our members for your continued

commitment and support of the Crane Lake Association

(CLA), particularly the fire service and water quality

protection activities.

For those who have recently moved onto Crane Lake –

Welcome and I hope you join the CLA! Our focus is

protecting Crane Lake water quality and providing fire

services.

See you on the lake……fred
