Heavy Rains and Dam Update

Heavy Rains and Dam Update

The following is an update from our TOA Ward 5 Councillor, Ian Mead on September 24th:

Hi everyone. As you know, this week has been an extreme rain event in most of Ontario. Our lake levels are at all-time highs.

The MNRF have been to our dam, dislodged a large tree from the spillway and removed a log. The water is flowing over the complete spillway and removing a log allows for 12 inches more to flow over the log jam. They may have to return to remove more logs. We have to remember that we are not the only dam they have to control – there are dozens, so we need to be patient.

We also have to realize that we are part of a huge watershed and with the ground already saturated all the rain that fell in our watershed comes to us – we are the bottom of our watershed which is a good thing in the really dry times – not so good right now. So we have to take the good with the bad.

Without more rain, this could take a few days to settle down.

In the meantime, take care and expect to find stuff (furniture, debris) floating anywhere.
